A foreign bank, registry or commercial partner may ask your Irish company for a certificate of good standing. Before ordering anything, establish which Irish registry document the recipient means and how it must be presented. A formation certificate, a current-status letter and an apostille serve different purposes.

The CRO describes the relevant product as a Letter of Status or Certificate of Good Standing and provides an ordering route through CORE. This guide focuses on identifying and preparing that document, not on treating authentication as a promise that a bank or foreign authority will approve your application.

Official guidance was reviewed on 16 October 2026. Check current CRO ordering instructions and destination requirements before paying. This is general document-preparation guidance, not a legal opinion on the company's status or an assessment of banking, solvency or tax eligibility.

What is an Irish certificate of good standing?

CRO's published FAQ uses Letter of Status and Certificate of Good Standing for the document confirming company incorporation and authority to undertake business in Ireland. The official ordering terminology matters when a foreign checklist uses a different phrase.

Read the actual issued letter rather than promising it will contain every statement a recipient wants. Do not tell a bank that the document certifies financial health, ownership or a particular licence unless the relevant evidence supports that claim.

Ask the recipient to confirm that the CRO product answers its request. An overseas institution may use certificate of existence, registry extract or good standing loosely; those words do not make different documents interchangeable.

Which company document has the recipient requested?

Translate the request into a document list before arranging certification. Identify each item by issuer and purpose, not simply by the word certificate. Keep the legal company name and CRO number consistent throughout the pack.

Use the table as a preparation aid. It is not a declaration that any one document will satisfy a bank, registry or court.

Get the receiving institution's checklist in writing

Start with the person who will assess the documents, not a general search result for the destination country. Two institutions in the same country may ask for different company records or presentation formats. Ask for clarification where the instructions say only original certificate without identifying the issuer.

Record the recipient, purpose, destination and submission deadline. Confirm whether the requirement applies to one company or several related companies. A parent company's document is not automatically evidence about its Irish subsidiary.

These practical questions reduce avoidable repeat orders and help a service provider scope the work.

  • Does the recipient accept the CRO Letter of Status for this purpose?
  • How recent must the underlying letter be at submission?
  • Is a digitally certified file acceptable, or is a particular paper format needed?
  • Is an apostille, authentication or consular step required?
  • Must a notary certify a copy or signature first?
  • Is a translation required, and who must certify it?
  • Will a scan suffice initially, and where must originals be delivered?

How to request the Letter of Status through CORE

Use the official CORE portal, locate the correct company and open its Reports options. CRO's FAQ places the status-letter order under that tab. Check the product description and current ordering terms before proceeding.

Search by the CRO number where you have it. CRO's entity-search guidance allows searches by name or register number; a number helps avoid confusing similarly named companies or an old trading name with the actual legal entity.

Save the order reference, receipt and delivered document. If the option or output does not match the requirement, ask CRO for clarification rather than substituting a screenshot of a search result. Do not share your account password with someone offering to place the order.

A duplicate incorporation certificate is a different request

If the original formation document is missing, the task may be obtaining a duplicate certificate, not ordering a status letter. CRO provides duplicate certificates through CORE and warns applicants to choose the correct business type.

A business-name certificate should not be substituted for an Irish company's incorporation certificate. Check whether the request concerns the incorporated company, its registered trading name or both. Matching names alone are not enough to identify the right record.

CRO says company incorporation certificates are digitally certified PDFs and can be emailed to third parties. Preserve the original electronic file and its certification features instead of recreating it in a word processor. Whether another presentation is required for foreign use is a separate question.

Good standing is not the same as tax clearance

Revenue describes tax clearance as confirmation that tax affairs are in order at the date of issue and provides the eTax Clearance service. That is a different issuer and process from the CRO document.

Where a recipient asks for both, obtain both rather than attaching the status letter twice under different filenames. Ask what the institution needs to verify and use the appropriate authorised channel for any verification details.

Likewise, a corporate-status document is not an accountant's solvency opinion or proof of beneficial ownership. A recipient may request additional evidence, and the company should answer the actual question with the appropriate records. Do not imply that incorporation or a status letter guarantees a bank account.

When an apostille may be relevant

The Hague Apostille Convention simplifies authentication of qualifying public documents for use between participating jurisdictions through a designated competent authority. Confirm that the applicable destination and document route are covered instead of assuming every overseas transaction uses the same process.

An apostille concerns the origin of the underlying document, including the relevant signature, capacity or seal. It does not turn the contents into a wider assurance about the company's affairs. The HCCH Handbook explains that distinction.

For a destination outside the applicable Convention route, ask about authentication and any further consular requirements. The service provider needs the destination and recipient instructions before advising on the sequence. This article does not set a universal country-by-country legalisation rule.

Check the document format before certification

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade distinguishes qualifying original public documents from copies and private documents that may need prior certification. Its published guidance includes CRO-issued, signed and stamped documents, while a file printed from a website or email is not automatically treated as that original category.

Show the actual document and the recipient's instructions to the person handling the process. Ask which signature is being authenticated and whether a certified copy or notarial step is needed. A digitally certified incorporation file and a casual printout should not be treated as identical formats.

Agree translation requirements before binding or certifying a multi-document pack. If the recipient requires a specific format, find out before paying for a version that cannot be used.

How recent must a status letter be?

Obtain the recipient's stated freshness requirement. Do not present a universal thirty-day or three-month rule as Irish law when it may simply be that institution's policy. Work backwards from the intended submission date and allow time for any additional preparation.

The HCCH Handbook distinguishes an apostille from the admissibility and effect of the underlying document. Authentication does not make an old company record current or remove the recipient's need for up-to-date evidence.

If the transaction is delayed, recheck the dates before sending originals. Ask whether a replacement underlying document is required and what that means for any existing certification. Do not alter dates or detach certification to reuse it on a different letter.

Review unresolved company-record issues separately

A company-record problem is not cured by ordering more copies. Check the current register, outstanding correspondence and any unresolved filing issue before describing the pack as current. If something is unclear, ask CRO or the appropriate adviser what must be resolved.

Annual returns are a separate obligation. CRO's current filing guidance states that companies file whether trading or not. Buying a status letter does not submit a missing B1, update an officer or change the registered office.

Keep responsibilities explicit: who resolves the record issue, who obtains the letter, who arranges certification and who checks the delivered pack. Avoid promising a clean output or a particular authority decision before the actual record and requirements have been reviewed.

A fictional example: an Irish LTD supplying an overseas bank

Imagine an Irish LTD whose overseas bank asks for current registry-status evidence and an authenticated incorporation document. The director initially has only the PDF received when the company was formed.

The useful first step is to confirm whether the bank accepts the CRO Letter of Status and what it means by authenticated. The director then identifies the company by number, obtains the requested registry output and asks the document provider to confirm the certification route for those actual files.

The completed pack is checked against the bank's written list before dispatch. If the bank also asks for an ownership chart or tax document, that remains a separate item. This example illustrates preparation, not an actual customer transaction or a promise that the bank will accept the application.

What StartCompany.ie can help you arrange

Our Apostille Documents service supports authentication and apostille preparation for Irish company documents. Before ordering, explain that your case concerns a CRO Letter of Status or good-standing request, identify the destination and provide the recipient's written requirements.

Confirm whether obtaining the underlying letter is included or must be handled separately, which documents are covered, whether prior certification is needed and how originals will be returned. Ask about translation, notary, courier or consular work rather than assuming every external cost is included.

Agree the total payable and realistic sequence before instructing the service. Purchasing support does not issue the CRO letter, create an apostille automatically or guarantee the recipient's decision. Authority processing and additional document requirements can affect completion.

For a simple domestic request that needs only the CRO output, you may be able to order directly through CORE. Professional help is most useful when there are several preparation steps to coordinate or the format requirements need clarification.

Before-you-order checklist

Use this short handover list to get an accurate scope. Keep sensitive company and identity records in the secure channel agreed with the provider, not in a public comment or an unverified request for account access.

  • Identify the company by its exact legal name and CRO number.
  • Obtain the recipient's document, freshness and format requirements.
  • Separate the status letter, incorporation evidence and any tax or ownership records.
  • Confirm the destination-specific certification route before paying.
  • Agree who obtains each document and handles any record correction.
  • Check delivery details, exclusions and total payable.
  • Retain the original files, order references and final dispatch record.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I order an Irish company certificate of good standing?

CRO directs applicants to the Letter of Status option under Reports in CORE. Identify the correct company and confirm that the receiving institution accepts that output before ordering.

Is a Letter of Status the same as the incorporation certificate?

No. The incorporation document concerns formation. The status-letter request is a separate CRO product. Ask which document the recipient actually requires rather than substituting one for the other.

Does good standing prove that all company taxes are paid?

No. Revenue tax clearance is a separate process. Do not present the CRO letter as a Revenue confirmation or as a wider opinion on the company's finances.

Does an apostille guarantee that the bank will accept the document?

No. It authenticates origin, not approval of a banking application or the contents of the underlying document. The recipient's applicable document requirements still matter.

Can I print an emailed certificate and assume it is ready for apostille?

Not automatically. Check the original document, its certification and the current authentication requirements. A printout and an issued public document may need different preparation.

Is a status letter always valid for three months?

Do not assume a universal period. Ask the recipient how recent its evidence must be at submission and confirm the timing before ordering additional certification.

Does ordering a letter fix a late annual return?

No. Outstanding filing work remains separate. Ask the relevant adviser or CRO how the company's actual record affects the requested output.

Does StartCompany.ie automatically obtain every document in an apostille order?

Confirm the scope first. Identify the underlying letter and other files, then agree procurement, certification, delivery, exclusions and total payable with the team.
