What is Business Name Registration?

If you wish to trade under a name other than your own personal name (for sole traders) or your registered company name (for companies), you are required by law to register that business name with the Companies Registration Office (CRO).

A business name is a trading name or brand name used to conduct business. For example, if your company is called "ABC Solutions Ltd" but you wish to trade as "QuickFix Services", you must register "QuickFix Services" as a business name.

Who Needs to Register?

  • Sole traders trading under a name other than their own surname
  • Partnerships trading under a firm name
  • Companies trading under a name other than their registered company name

What You Receive

Upon successful registration, you will receive:

  • Certificate of Registration of Business Name from the CRO
  • Confirmation of the registered business name on the public register
  • The legal right to trade under the registered business name

Important Notes

A business name registration does not provide exclusive rights to the name — it is not the same as a trademark. The registration must be renewed annually with the CRO.
