If you are forming an Irish company, director identity details matter. The Companies Registration Office uses identity information when processing filings, and the wrong name, date of birth, PPSN or IPN details can delay company registration or later annual return filings.
This guide explains the difference between a PPSN, an IPN and a VIF, who needs each one, and how to prepare before you register your company in Ireland.
What is a PPSN?
A PPSN is a Personal Public Service Number. Irish resident directors usually have a PPSN already. When a director has a PPSN, the name and date of birth used in CRO/RBO filings should match official records. Even small differences in name order or spelling can create filing issues.
What is an IPN?
An IPN is an Identified Person Number issued after identity verification. It is commonly needed where a director or beneficial owner does not have an Irish PPSN. Once issued, the IPN can be used for relevant CRO and RBO filings.
If you are a non-resident founder or a director without a PPSN, our IPN/VIF number application service can help you prepare the identity step alongside your company formation.
What is a VIF?
VIF stands for Verified Identity Form. It is used where a person needs identity verification before an IPN can be issued. The details entered on the VIF should be consistent with the person's legal identity documents and later CRO/RBO filings.
When do directors need an IPN?
Directors and beneficial owners may need an IPN where they do not have an Irish PPSN and need to complete CRO or RBO identity requirements.
- Non-resident directors forming an Irish company
- Beneficial owners without a PPSN
- Company officers whose details must be verified for CRO or RBO filings
- Founders who need to complete annual return or beneficial ownership filings later
Common IPN and VIF mistakes
- Name mismatch: using a nickname, shortened first name or different name order
- Date of birth mismatch: entering a date that does not match official records
- Wrong document details: using expired or inconsistent identity documents
- Leaving it too late: waiting until a filing deadline before sorting identity verification
- Confusing PPSN and IPN: entering one where the other is required
Does every Irish company director need a PPSN?
No. A person can act as a director without an Irish PPSN, but they may need an IPN for relevant CRO/RBO filings. This is especially common for non-resident company formation.
How this affects company formation
If all directors and beneficial owners have the correct identity details ready, company formation is usually smoother. If one person needs an IPN, it is better to identify that at the start rather than after the filing process has begun.
Our Standard, Premium and Non-Resident packages include IPN support where needed. You can compare the options on our company formation pricing page.
