Your Irish company does not exist yet, but Form A1 asks for its registered office. Can you arrange the address first? What company name and number should you give the provider, and when is it safe to put the address into an application?
Yes, address arrangements can be made for a company being formed, subject to the provider's agreement and checks. The important buying question is not simply whether you can pay early. It is whether the proposed company, permitted address use, activation and formation instructions have been matched before filing. This guide focuses on that pre-incorporation handover, rather than switching an existing company's address.
1. Why the address has to be settled before incorporation
Section 50 requires the registered-office particulars in the incorporation statement. CRO's formation steps identify the registered office among the Form A1 details. Waiting until after the certificate is issued to decide which address the application should contain reverses the sequence.
CRO also says the address must be a physical location in the State, not merely a PO Box, and capable of receiving An Post deliveries. An overseas home, a contact-email inbox or a mailbox number is not a substitute for the Irish registered office.
You do not necessarily have to buy a commercial address. If another suitable Irish address is available with the necessary agreement and arrangements, discuss it with the presenter. The reason to buy a service is to meet an actual address and mail-handling need, not because every founder must purchase an extra product.
Give the formation provider a settled instruction, not an address copied from a web search. Make clear whether you are arranging a standalone service or using an address included in a formation package.
2. Separate an address order from permission to use it
An order being received, a payment being completed and an address being allocated are different events. StartCompany.ie's published service explains that the team reviews the company details, completes the required checks and confirms the allocated address before use. Do not assume that a checkout confirmation completes those steps.
Ask for the exact address, the proposed company to which the arrangement applies and confirmation of permitted use on the incorporation application. Check any instructions about the company name, care-of wording and the person submitting A1. Keep that confirmation with the formation working papers.
Do not copy the provider's own public contact or registered-office address into your application merely because you found it in a footer. It may not be the address allocated to your proposed company. Nor does buying one service establish permission to use an address for another business or another purpose.
Where a formal section 50 care-of-agent arrangement is used, have the presenter confirm the approved agent's identity and required filing details. CRO describes this as a specific arrangement involving an agent approved for that purpose. Do not infer that every seller is itself a CRO-approved Registered Office Agent.
3. Use a proposed name honestly and leave the number question clear
Tell the provider that the company is not yet incorporated. Supply the proposed legal name, the applicant's contact details and any existing formation reference. StartCompany.ie's address checkout labels the CRO company number as optional if the company is not already incorporated. Do not borrow another company's number or create a placeholder number to get through a form.
A proposed name remains a proposal. CRO's name guidance distinguishes name checking and reservation from incorporation and warns against spending on name-related items before the certificate is received. Agree how the address order will be updated if the proposed name changes or the application is returned.
For example, a fictional founder orders for a proposed 'Harbour Example Limited', then the presenter recommends another name before filing. The useful next step is to notify the address team and align both sets of instructions. It is not to create two inconsistent customer records or assume that an address order reserves either name.
Section 25 places the start of the company's corporate existence at the incorporation date in its certificate. Before then, confirm who is entering the service agreement and what the terms say about the pending company. Do not assume a company that has not yet been incorporated can already be treated as the contracting party.
4. Compare a standalone address with the formation package
Before ordering twice, compare the live package inclusions. StartCompany.ie's Premium package currently lists a registered-office address in its formation scope. A founder choosing that route should coordinate the included address with the formation team rather than automatically buying a second standalone address engagement.
A standalone address can be the relevant route where incorporation is being handled separately or the chosen package does not include the address needed. Explain what has already been ordered. The package label alone does not establish every service or solve a separate director-residence requirement.
Compare the agreed scope and total payable, not only headline prices. Ask when the address-service period starts, its end date and how renewal is arranged. If incorporation is delayed, do not assume the service year automatically restarts when the certificate arrives.
Also ask what happens if the application is abandoned, rejected or materially changed. Cancellation, refunds, deferred activation and changes to a proposed customer are matters to confirm under the actual agreement. This guide does not promise a refund, automatic extension or a particular allocation time.
5. Do not copy the registered office into every address field
Section 22 distinguishes the registered office from where central administration will normally be carried on. CRO's activity guidance also asks for the proposed activity in the State and the places where it will occur. An address service is not a reason to replace the actual operating plan with the same postal address in every field.
Officer details are separate again. Section 149 includes usual residential addresses for directors and individual secretaries, subject to the applicable exemption provisions. Permission to use a company office does not automatically permit its use as a person's residential address or remove required personal disclosures.
If you live abroad or work from another premises, describe those facts to the presenter. Ask which address belongs in each field and why. If a bank or another provider asks for operating-address evidence, check its requirements rather than assuming a registered-office agreement will meet every onboarding question.
The address arrangement also does not appoint a director or secretary, provide office rental, or settle tax residence or immigration permission. Keep those decisions visible as separate work rather than treating the address as proof of a complete Irish operating presence.
6. Give the presenter a clear go-ahead, not an assumption
Before the A1 draft is approved, compare the registered-office entry with the provider's confirmation. Resolve spelling, address lines, relevant agent details and the proposed name while the application is still being prepared. Nominate one person to communicate changes so the address team and formation presenter receive the same version.
Imagine a founder has paid for an address but is still waiting for allocation checks. Copying the provider's website address into A1 does not resolve that wait. Ask the team what remains outstanding and keep the application instructions pending until the correct arrangement is confirmed.
Now change the facts: the company has already been incorporated using a home address and the founder buys a new address afterwards. That is no longer the initial A1 handover. CRO describes a B2 change process and says the change becomes legally effective when the form is registered. Buying the replacement address alone does not update the public record.
If A1 has been submitted but incorporation is not confirmed, tell the presenter immediately about an address problem. Do not assume a B2 for an existing company is the correct way to fix a pending application. Have the actual filing status and appropriate correction route checked.
| Your situation | What to coordinate |
|---|---|
| Company not incorporated | Address confirmation, then A1 details |
| A1 already submitted | Presenter review of the pending application |
| Company already incorporated | Address activation and separate B2 work |
| Package includes an address | One coordinated arrangement, not duplicate orders |
7. Plan what happens when the certificate arrives
Send the team the confirmed legal name and CRO number once available and complete any requested onboarding follow-up. Check that the company's registered-office entry matches the agreed arrangement and keep the service confirmation and renewal dates in the company file.
Agree who receives notifications and who acts on official correspondence. An address that receives post is only part of the workflow; someone still needs to read the message and assign any response. Give the team a reliable contact and update it when responsibility changes.
StartCompany.ie's address product includes notification and forwarding of official CRO and Revenue correspondence under the agreed terms. It does not include office rental, general parcel handling or annual-return filing. Do not make it a stock-delivery location, customer returns centre or meeting venue without a separate agreed arrangement.
Ask separately about statutory-record custody or inspection arrangements if needed. Address and mail services should not be read as an unlimited promise to store every company book, monitor every online filing system or complete all post-incorporation compliance work.
8. Pre-incorporation address checklist
Use this checklist before authorising the formation application. If a point is unresolved, identify who will answer it and when; do not fill the gap with an invented number or an unconfirmed address.
- State clearly that incorporation is pending and give the proposed name and applicant contact details.
- Check whether the chosen formation package already includes the address you need.
- Complete the provider's requested checks through its secure process.
- Obtain the allocated address, permitted use and relevant filing instructions before A1 submission.
- Keep officer residential details, central administration and activity locations separate.
- Confirm the service start, expiry, renewal and any delayed or abandoned-formation terms.
- Agree who submits A1, communicates changes and supplies the certificate details afterwards.
- Confirm mail handling, separate services and the total payable before instruction.
9. Choose the address route that matches your formation
StartCompany.ie offers a 12-month registered-office service for new and existing Irish companies, working through authorised partners. Review the product, explain that formation is pending and confirm the required information and checks. Use only the address allocated and confirmed for your arrangement.
If you need both incorporation and an address, compare the formation-with-registered-office options and current package inclusions first. If another presenter is handling incorporation, explain that split so the address confirmation can be passed to the right person without implying that the standalone order includes A1 preparation.
The current checkout does not create an automatic address subscription; renewal is arranged separately. A later B2 filing, office rental and other company services are not automatically included in the address order. Confirm additional work and total payable explicitly.
Buying an address is one preparation step. It does not reserve a company name, incorporate the company or guarantee CRO approval, a bank account or a particular tax outcome. A clear sequence and consistent records are more useful than treating a payment receipt as the finished setup.
